According to Sky Sports, Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku has admitted that he would be open to leaving the club to play in Italy in the future. He claimed that Serie A champions Juventus have a great project in place for the players to get attracted.
The 25-year-old’s contract at Old Trafford is active until 2022. He also has an option to increase the stay for 12 more months if required.
However, him stating his liking to play in Italy by saying, “Why not? I hope it happens”, suggests that he is open to a move away. Lukaku has called Juventus as one of the top teams in Europe, as United get set to host them in the Champions League next week. (Sky Sports)
Here’s why the Belgian leaving Manchester United could be blessing in disguise for Jose Mourinho and his men:
Lukaku joined United last summer for an initial fee of around £75m. He was scoring goals for fun at Everton, which attracted interested from the Red Devils. However, the 25-year-old has only managed to score 20 goals in 42 league appearances and is not really making a difference when it matters.
He is a perfect striker when playing against mid-table or lower placed teams but the Belgian struggles to play against a top-six rival when the pressure is high to deliver at all costs.
He tends to miss big chances that are vital to the team. This is where United need a new number nine, who can lead the line in every situation.
Hence, if Lukaku wants to leave the club, it may not be a very bad news for them. Mourinho can then look for a striker who can deliver more than the 25-year-old. Furthermore, if and when the Belgian leaves, it would be for a big sum of money, hence, the Red Devils can use the huge fund on another striker.
Therefore, all will not be doom and gloom if the former Everton man leaves Old Trafford. It is always important for a big team to have a world-class striker. And Romelu Lukaku is not exactly world-class.
