Here are two Premier League outcasts Aston Villa must sign in January

Championship side Aston Villa have appointed Dean Smith as their new head coach, with ex-Chelsea defender John Terry as his assistant, reports the BBC.

Aston Villa sacked Steve Bruce after a run of one win in nine Championship games. The Villans have appointed Smith, who left Brentford after guiding the club to top half finishes in the Championship in each of his three seasons.

Villa currently sit 15th in the table and have also appointed John Terry as Smith’s assistant. Terry, 37, won five Premier League titles, five FA Cups and a Champions League title during his time at Chelsea before leaving the club in 2017 to join Aston Villa.

The former England international left Villa at the end of last season after they failed to gain Premier League promotion but is now back at Villa Park in a different role.

Smith has a massive job in front of him and the new Villa manager has a couple of months to know his squad before making his move in the January window. If Smith is to take Villa out of the rut and get them to the playoffs, he needs at least a couple of players in January.

That being said, here are two Premier League outcasts Aston Villa must sign.

Jonny Williams (Crystal Palace)

Jonny Williams made his breakthrough into the Crystal Palace first-team at the beginning of the 2011/12 season but hasn’t been able to live up to the hype due to recurrent injury problems.

Williams has been on loan to lower division teams but has struggled to perform consistently. Now back to Palace, the Welsh midfielder is out of favour under manager Roy Hodgson.

At 25, Williams has enough time to revive his career and that could only happen if he leaves Palace in January. Aston Villa must take a gamble on Williams, who could become an influential player in their chase for promotion.

Phil Jagielka (Everton)

Phil Jagielka is coming to the end of his career and would love to bring down the curtains by playing regular football. However, that hasn’t been the case for Jagielka as he has seen no minutes on the pitch since his red card in Everton’s season opener against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Following the red card, Jagielka had a minor injury and regaining his place in the first-team now looks difficult, particularly with Michael Keane and Kurt Zouma playing well.
