Hasenhuttl is absolutely right in targeting this 27-year-old Bundesliga sensation and Southampton must get him

Why Southampton should sign Patrick Herrmann in January

According to a report in the German version of Express, new Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl has identified Patrick Herrmann as a potential transfer target for the January transfer window. The player is currently plying his trade in Bundesliga with Borussia Monchengladbach.

The Saints boss is familiar with the German league, having managed RB Leipzig and Ingolstadt in the past. The report claims that the Austrian-born gaffer is keen to add pace and firepower to his team, especially in the front line, which just proves the point that he is not satisfied with the current resources Southampton have.

Hence, it is clear why Hasenhuttl is trying to sign Herrmann, whose contract with Monchengladbach runs out at the end of this season. Here’s why the German would be an ideal signing for the Saints in the Premier League:

Patrick Herrmann will offer something different

Southampton have really struggled for goals this season, carrying on with their perennial problem in the past couple of years. As a result, they are now 19th in the league table after winning only nine points from 16 games.

The worrying fact is that they have only netted 13 goals and have left no edge in conceding as well, having already shipped in 30.

While the defensive side of things can be improved by better organisation of the new manager and more determination of the players, the attacking side needs an operation. Herrmann could help the latter in a big way. The German is a quality player who is a right winger by trade, but can operate on the other side and as a number 10 too.

He possesses raw pace and adept dribbling skills to go past defenders with speed and precision. The 27-year-old is a good passer of the ball and can shoot at sight whenever the opportunity arises. In the seven Bundesliga appearances (five of them from the bench), Herrmann has scored two goals and supplied two assists.

His rapid pace allows him to be a perfect threat on the counter-attack, something which can be a useful weapon in the Premier League. This is exactly what Saints have lacked in the past 24 months. They are desperately in need of someone who can be a threat even they have less possession than the opposition.

Hence, the club should support the identification of the new manager and offer the funds required to buy the 27-year-old German.
