Good Job Pochettino: Tottenham’s Imminent New £15m Signing Could Help Break The Wembley Curse

Why Llorente Would Be A Key Player To End Tottenham’s Wembley Curse

Cheeky late bids and overambitious, inflated prices for average players are the signature signs of a transfer deadline day, and this year is certainly no different. According to well-known media outlet goal.com, Tottenham have apparently matched Chelsea’s £15million bid for Swansea City striker Fernando Llorente, and it seems like the Spaniard is now having a medical before his move to the white half of London. The Stamford Bridge outfit has been trying to broker a deal for him, but it seems like their move has been hijacked by Daniel Levy and his board.

Need for Llorente

Spurs have Harry Kane as a recognised and established striker in their squad, with only Vincent Janssen and South Korean Heung-min Son as other players capable of playing in a similar position. Kane takes time to shift gears and you cannot always rely on Son to deliver you goals, so they needed a backup option who could play up front and get them the goals they needed during crucial stages of the season. Janssen has struggled and he cannot be trusted either, as it would only put more pressure on him.

The 32-year-old is an experienced Premier League campaigner and plays much in the way most forwards do in their mid-30s, which means he can still get them 10 to 15 goals a season, which is just what Spurs would need to break their much talked-about Wembley curse.

Of course, having Llorente also means that not only will the pressure decrease on Kane but also give him an opportunity to learn from one of league’s well-known goalscorers. The Spaniard relies on his movement and footballing brains to find pockets of space, something Kane can take note of. Moreover, given how Tottenham play at home, it also means that he will likely create space for the wingbacks to operate, which will increase their offensive threats by quite a few notches.

The addition of Llorente also means that both he and Kane can start together in a 3-5-2 formation, and it is likely that they will combine well if they play long and short, and widen the midfield. This will also give the likes of Christian Eriksen more time on the ball, which will directly translate to more attacking moves being generated. Also, given how long and hectic the season is, it is likely that Kane will hit lean patches sooner rather than later, and the former Vitesse Arnhem player will come in really handy then.

All said and done, Tottenham should close this deal as soon as possible and it could well end up being one of the steals of the summer.
