Premier League new boys Huddersfield Town look set to make a new and improved bid for Derby County main man Tom Ince. Derby knocked back Huddersfield’s first bid, thought to be around £7million, though the Yorkshire club are likely to come back with another offer this week for the 25-year-old former Liverpool man.
Huddersfield look like a good option for the winger, as no interest has been apparent from the very top Premier League clubs. At this stage of his career, waiting too long for a bid from the big league only to end up staying in the Championship should not be an option.
It feels like Ince has been around forever, but it must be remembered that he is still only 25 and has tons of potential to unlock. With every year that goes by, his goal scoring record gets better and by now, he looks like he is ready for the Premier League once again.
He will be a few percent better with a few more months behind him, especially playing up against international-class full-backs, and so the player Huddersfield sign now will not be the player they have, come winter. He will be a deal better than that.
Buying from the Premier League these days seems to come with a massive premium. Clubs are not desperate to sell and so they feel they can charge what they want. Buying from the Championship is slightly different though, in that most players have their price.
This is especially true at Derby, where it seems no secret that they are willing to offload Ince for around the £10million mark to help finance Gary Rowett’s squad rebuilding, something promoted by owner Mel Morris. £10million is very little by Premier League standards and so Huddersfield can afford to take the risk on a player who needs to prove himself again at the top level.
They may yet find that they pay £10million for a player who in a year’s time could be valued at double of that. It makes perfect sense for them to try to push this deal through at the earliest opportunity. Ince’s passing success rate of over 83% is high, but especially when you consider that he is a player who likes to run with the ball and as such will often be tackled often.
He’s not looking after his stats by simply playing easy short balls to his midfielders. The fact then that Ince can keep possession for his side as well as provide a clearly huge attacking threat is a massive combination and is valuable at Premier League level.
