Why Celtic should go all out for Milan Pavkov in January

According to the Scotsman, Celtic had sent scouts to watch Red Star Belgrade striker Milan Pavkov in the Champions League game against Napoli.

Earlier this month, Milan Pavkov grabbed a lot of eyeballs when he scored a quick-fire double for Red Star Belgrade to beat Liverpool 2-0 in the Champions League. The Serbian scored the first goal with a towering header before thrashing a real beauty past goalkeeper Alisson Becker from distance for his second.

Milan Pavkov joined Red Star Belgrade from Radnicki in January 2017 before being sent back on loan to his former club. And on his first Champions League start, he demonstrated his class, consigning Liverpool to an embarrassing 2-0 defeat at Belgrade.

After seeing the big Serb sink Liverpool single-handedly on a big night, Celtic must consider tabling an offer in January.

Celtic have significantly recovered from a slow start but question marks still remain over their attack. Odsonne Edouard has managed to score goals of late but one cannot ignore the fact that the Hoops failed to fill the void left by Moussa Dembele in the summer.

The way Moussa Dembele left on the transfer deadline day gave Brendan Rodgers absolutely no opportunity to bring in a replacement before the start of the new season. But Rodgers can surely bring in a replacement in January.

Injuries and Leigh Griffiths’ poor form would give the Celtic manager another reason to splash the cash on a forward and he would be wise to sign Milan Pavkov in January.

Standing tall at 6ft 4in, Pavkov is a monster in the air, which makes him a threat during set-pieces. Despite his towering frame, he isn’t slow and can carry the ball forward very well and spread the play. The Serbian is very strong and comes out on top in almost every aerial duel.

Pavkov has a sweet right foot with which he can hit the ball with real venom. He has a decent technique but what makes him better is his extraordinary work rate off the ball. The 24-year-old may not have the experience of playing outside Serbia but he’s got all the qualities to be a massive hit in the Scottish Premiership.

At 24, Pavkov has his best years ahead of him and the time could be ripe for him to take the next major step in his career. A move to Celtic should be wonderful in January, as Rodgers would get a player to ease the burden of scoring goals from Odsonne Edouard.

Also, Pavkov is out of contract at Red Star Belgrade in the summer of 2019, meaning Celtic have a chance to land the big Serb in a cut-price deal in January.
