According to a report from the Scottish Sun, Celtic are exploring a deal for Borussia Dortmund right-back Jeremy Toljan.
Jeremy Toljan, 24, joined Borussia Dortmund from Hoffenheim in 2017 and made 27 appearances in his first season at the club. But the former Germany youth international has failed to play a single senior game for Dortmund all season under Lucian Favre.
The report claims that Dortmund are keen on sending Jeremy Toljan out on loan for first-team football. Keeping that in mind, Celtic must do everything possible to crack a deal for the 24-year-old defender.
Celtic have been searching for a new right-back this month to replace their ageing star, Mikael Lustig. He has been a brilliant servant for the Hoops but his performance levels have massively dipped this season.
Also, the Swede is out of contract at the end of the season and no new deal has been offered till date, meaning Brendan Rodgers might be happy to let go Lustig for free at the end of this campaign.
Lustig’s deputy at right-back, Cristian Gamboa, hasn’t made a case for himself to start regularly for the Hoops and is out of contract in the summer too. The contract situations of both Lustig and Gamboa should prompt Rodgers to plan for the future and sign a right-back soon.
Jeremy Toljan would be a brilliant fit at the Parkhead. He may have been completely frozen out of the first-team at Dortmund this season but none can take away his experience of playing in the Bundesliga for former club Hoffenheim.
The German is a modern day full-back who loves to maraud forward and help his team as much as he can. Toljan is also capable of playing on either flank, and his best years should still be ahead of him despite his struggles at Dortmund. Still only 24, he has the potential to be a massive upgrade on Lustig.
Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic have enjoyed a solid January transfer window but a loan deal for Toljan before the deadline would represent a significant piece of business. The German would undoubtedly be a top acquisition for Rodgers’ defensive ranks.
