Go for It Rangers: Why the signing of this free-agent trio would make Gerrard’s first season very interesting

3 free-agents who would make Gerrard’s first season at Rangers very interesting

New Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has been busy in the transfer market, having already signed seven new players, including Jon Flanagan and Scott Arfield. And now that Gareth McAuley, Claudio Yacob and Boaz Myhill have been released by West Bromwich Albion, Gerrard might want to look into the possibility of bringing the trio to Ibrox.

Gareth McAuley

Despite his age, the 38-year-old still has some gas left in his tank and would be an amazing free transfer. He offers stability, experience and leadership skills – qualities which are much needed by Gerrard and his side. The Northern Irishman is excellent in the air and is also a huge threat from set-pieces.

Rangers need defensive reinforcements as they conceded 50 league goals last term, the worst defensive record among the top six teams in the Scottish Premiership. And signing McAuley would be hugely beneficial for the Gers.

Boaz Myhill

Goalkeepers Wes Foderingham and Jak Alnwick have been linked with leaving Rangers in the summer. Although the Gers have already signed Allan McGregor, Myhill could be a shrewd signing for the Scottish giants.

Myhill made 82 appearances in all competitions during his time at West Brom is a very experienced custodian. The Welshman made a name for himself at Hull as he inspired the Tigers to some of their biggest success in recent years. He will bring a lot of experience with him to Ibrox.

Claudio Yacob

The defensive midfielder, who featured 175 times in the Albion colours, however, managed just 16 Premier League appearances last season, starting eight times.

Andy Halliday has been linked with leaving Rangers, and Yacob might prove a valuable acquisition for Gerrad. The Argentine, who has the experience of playing in the Premier League, is strong and tough. Yacob is just 30 years old, meaning he has still plenty left to offer.

With Halliday potentially leaving and Jordan Rossiter being injury-prone, signing Yacob could work wonders for Rangers.
