Why Newcastle United Should Sign Jonathan Bamba In The January Transfer Window

Newcastle United have gone from strength-to-strength under Rafa Benitez but it is understood that the manager is keen on adding to their forces up front.  The Magpies have been linked with Saint-Etienne winger Jonathan Bamba.

They have already signed Christian Atsu on a permanent basis from Chelsea following a season-long loan spell last term, but Benitez may yet want more. As far as his other options go, talks are going on with winger Yoan Gouffran about extending his stay with the club. Besides Gouffran, Matt Ritchie is Benitez’s only other recognised winger right now since Rolando Aarons is troubled with injuries, making Bamba a viable option.

Jonathan Bamba progressed through the ranks with Saint-Etienne, having joined the club from UJA Alfortville in 2011, but he has spent most of his time out on loan. After spells with FC Paris and Sint-Truiden, Bamba was sent out on loan to Angers in January 2017, where he notched 3 goals and 2 assists in just 16 appearances.

He has the makings of a true match-winner and, considering Newcastle’s performances this season so far, Bamba can only help them refine their attack further. Should Bamba complete a move to St James’ Park, however, he would have to battle it out with Matt Ritchie, Jacob Murphy and Christian Atsu for a place in the starting XI.

In fact, Benitez might even look at him as a tactical option, who he can send on from the bench. Bamba has the pace to burst wide, get past opposition defenders and also stick to the line. Provided Benitez allows him enough freedom and space, he can also play beautiful long balls over the top.

He is capable of using both feet and is noteworthy for his achievements despite being so young. He is adept at finding the far corner or delivering a cross with his supposedly weaker left-foot. Bamba has also demonstrated the vision and intelligence to pick out his team-mates with a variety of crosses. Thus, the player can easily link up with other players at Newcastle and the scope for his growth will be unlimited under Benitez’s watchful eye.

The move will certainly benefit the club since it will add a different dimension to their attack while also helping Benitez to rotate the squad better. However, it remains to be seen if they can convince Bamba to move as the player might not be too keen on foregoing chances of playing regular first-team football.

Having said that, Newcastle are in an exciting transition period right now and that can open up several opportunities for Bamba, especially at his age. The club should definitely make a move for the player but they will have to make an enticing offer to lure the youngster to St. James’ Park in January.
