Why David Brooks Of Sheffield United Would Be A Great Signing For Liverpool

Sheffield United fans have every reason to be happy this campaign, given how the team is currently performing under manager Chris Wilder. They lie 3rd in the Championship table with 21 points from 11 games; 7 wins, 4 losses and no draws. Despite a narrow 2-1 defeat to Nottingham Forest before the international break, the supporters from South Yorkshire are seemingly delighted with the progress of the club, and above all youngster David Brooks’.

Brooks, 20, has burst onto the scenes for the Blades this term with some eye-catching displays. The youngster’s performances for Sheffield United have caught the attention of a number of Premier League clubs and according to various reports, Liverpool are leading the race to sign the highly-rated midfielder.

In May earlier this year, given the fact he is eligible to represent both England and Wales, as he was born in Warrington, Brooks opted to play for England U-20s in the Toulon Tournament in France. The midfielder scored in the final, guiding England to glory. With his rollicking displays in France, he also scooped the player of the tournament award.

Such has been the case of Brooks’ meteoric rise as he’s already been recognised at international level too. After opting to represent Wales, he received his first call-up from Chris Coleman for the senior squad this week, for the two World Cup qualifiers against Georgia and Ireland.

Released by Manchester City just over two years ago, Brooks after having made a handful of cup appearances for Sheffield United last season, is making giant leaps this season. The 20-year-old has made 11 appearances across all competitions (5 starts) and has chipped in with 2 assists.

Brooks played an excellent game in the Steel City derby against Sheffield Wednesday on September 24, playing for a full 90 minutes and bagging one assist and the Man of the Match award.

Due to the starlet’s rapid development, it is no wonder Premier League clubs have started noticing him. Liverpool are set to accelerate their interest in Brooks, but face competition from Merseyside rivals Everton. Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is believed to be an admirer of the pacey midfielder, and going with the attacking system he has deployed at the club, there won’t be any bolts from the blue if the Reds lure Brooks.

Since Klopp’s days at Borussia Dortmund, he has always had a positive reputation for developing young talents and helping them reach their potential. At Liverpool, the steady rise of players Trent Alexander-Arnold, Ben Woodburn and Sheyi Ojo are examples of Klopp’s nurturing of talents.

Brooks also falls under the same category; a prodigy, brimming with confidence and showcasing his talent at the Championship level. However, Brooks’ acquisition won’t be a high-profile signing given the lack of experience he has. Also, the Warrington-born player will not directly make it to first-team ahead of the likes of Emre Can, Phillipe Coutinho and Sadio Mane. Perhaps, his signing will be deemed as one for the future.

However, Sheffield manager Chris Wilder will be determined to keep hold of the dynamic midfielder at Bramall Lane and will try everything to tie him down to a new long-term contract. But should Liverpool decide to swoop in for Brooks, Sheffield may find it an uphill task to keep hold of their unearthed gem.
