If money is available, a major overhaul will take place at St. James’ Park and Whitley Park this summer as Rafa Benitez chips away at getting the sort of playing squad he demands as manager at Newcastle United.
Players such as Jamaal Lascelles have grown into their roles in this division while Martin Dubravka and Kenedy have made excellent early appearances to help improve the squad, the former perhaps even staying on beyond the end of this season.
To make room though, some will leave and in Newcastle’s case, I would think there will be quite a number of departures with these three being among them:
Rolando has plenty of talent but has been an injury case for the entirety of his first-team career on Tyneside and despite his obvious skills, he hasn’t produced anywhere near enough for a manager of Rafa’s quality to keep him.
Whenever a player goes out on loan, like Aarons has gone to Verona, fans often think that the game time there will lead to him being a first-team player at the parent club come the summer but the brutal fact is that if it was felt he’d be good enough by then, he wouldn’t have been allowed to leave in the first place.
Mitro is mad and people love that. However, it has done him no favours on the pitch and I only wish more Newcastle fans would see that his so-called ‘passion’ has cost him goals and therefore points for his team, over the years.
An obvious sign of where he is at is that despite his availability being made public in January, only Middlesbrough, Fulham and Anderlecht were serious about signing him.
No Premier League or La Liga club made a genuine approach, which tells you something about his overall ability right now.
Many in the area are fans of Elliot and there’s no doubt he’s a nice guy. However, it would be right for both the club and the player to move on now.
Karl Darlow seemed to have finally usurped him as No.1 at the club until Martin Dubravka was signed on loan, pushing Elliot further down the pecking order. With the possibility of the Slovakian ‘keeper staying on in the summer and Freddie Woodman pushing all the time for more game time, it appears Elliot’s time is up.
