Why Dani Alves Would Be A Good Signing For Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur enjoyed an extremely successful domestic campaign under Mauricio Pochettino as they finished 2nd in Premier League behind Chelsea. But they had a miserable outing in UEFA Champions League competition and the Argentine boss is now keen to inject experience within his youthful outfit.

The future of Kyle Walker is up in the air after he was dropped from the side in the final few weeks of the campaign, where he was replaced by the promising Kieran Trippier. Although Trippier has already established himself as a decent replacement of Walker in the right-back role, the North London outfit, nevertheless, will be looking to include an experienced resource in order to compete among the best in Europe. According to Daily Mail, Spurs boss Pochettino is eyeing a move for veteran Brazilian Dani Alves and plotting a swoop for the Juventus right-back on a two-year deal.

Alves, though 34, is still rated as one of world’s finest right-backs for his agility, overlapping runs, link up play, top-notch crossing skills, and attacking attributes. He ended his years of association with Barcelona (he joined them back in 2008-09 campaign after spending 6 seasons with La Liga heavyweights Sevilla) last year as the Catalans decided not to renew his contract. Following Barca’s ignorance, Alves completed a Bosman transfer to Juventus and won the Serie A title, as well as enjoyed an impressive Champions League run where they were humbled by defending champions Real Madrid in the tournament final.

Having won the prestigious Champions League trophy thrice in his career along with 6 La Liga titles and a Serie A triumph in his debut season in Italy, the decorated Brazilian is still confident of performing at the highest level. He previously expressed his desire to ply his trade to Premier League and his quotes might exhilarate the Spurs fans. He said in March last year:

“It’s special. There’s a corner and it’s like it’s a goal, I’ve always said that playing in England is something I’ve got pending. I don’t know when but I’d like to play there, to experience in person what I see from the sofa. The way the people live football. Wow, it’s incredible. Full stadiums, living every moment.”

Pochettino usually prefers to work with youngsters, and a youthful Spurs side did not disappoint the gaffer as they delivered a stellar show with an attacking display of highest calibre.

Despite being in the dusk of his career, Alves is capable of competing at highest level for at least a couple of more seasons and his experience as well as quality seem to fit the bill in order to encounter the competitiveness and the difficulty of Premier League football. A veteran of Alves’ stature will enrich Spurs’ squad and guide them to have a better run in Champions League, the most elite competition in Europe.

The deal, however, looks unlikely as Spurs do have a strict wage structure and the 100-time capped Brazilian holds a key role in Juve boss Massimiliano Allegri’s future stratagem. An ambitious bid might still work for the North Londoners if they plan to inject experience in their squad and achieve title glory.
