Two January Signings That Could Give Rangers A Real Boost

For this season so far, read last season. Despite a huge summer recruitment drive and many changes to the playing squad, nothing has really changed a hell of a lot at Rangers in the last few months.

The gap between themselves and Celtic, while not widening, has not closed down either, and watching the likes of Barrie McKay, Joe Garner and Martyn Waghorn scoring goals in the English Championship has been particularly galling for the fans of the club.

Given the club’s current situation, there’s many a flashy player we could name as being ideal for Rangers but in the current climate they just won’t be realistic prospects. Here though are two players I fully expect to sign for the Gers in January and both would go a long way in increasing the club’s European qualification and domestic cup winning prospects:

Jamie Walker (Heart of Midlothian)

The winger should really have already been at the club, though his protracted move hit many bumps and was not helped by the constant managerial and directorial upheaval at Tynecastle over the summer.

The move didn’t happen at all in the end, but Walker is contracted to Hearts only until May. While the club would be tempted to wait until next summer and pick up their target for free, they really need him now to help their cause and they need to ensure that someone else doesn’t nip in before they do next summer.

Walker has real quality, certainly in the context of this league anyway, and would go a long way on his own to increasing Rangers’ chances of at least a domestic trophy.

James McCarthy (Everton)

McCarthy possesses real quality and would compliment Graham Dorrans brilliantly. He is an Ireland international but long gone (thankfully) are the days of such players not playing for Rangers and he would make a great addition to this squad. I have little doubt that his international boss Martin O’Neill would do whatever he can do to discourage such a move, but his domestic manager Ronald Koeman would actively encourage it should he be resigned to losing the midfielder.

Everton have spent fortunes on ‘improving’ their squad and while things have not gone to plan thus far, Koeman cannot lose face and so he is likely to persevere with his new boys at the expense of the highly-rated McCarthy.

The former Hamilton and Wigan man may yet be at the World Cup in Russia next summer and such a player cannot be turned down by Rangers, as long as they do indeed get the chance to sign him up.
