Go for it Parkinson: This Premier League-winning Englishman could solve Bolton’s midfield problems

Why Bolton Wanderers must sign Jack Rodwell this summer

Last season wasn’t great for Bolton Wanderers. The team finished 21st in the Championship, just two points above the relegation zone. Phil Parkinson would know that his squad is in dire need of new players, so he’ll surely look to freshen things up.

The 50-year-old manager has been active on the transfer market so far. Six players have been brought in, while 13 have left. Clayton Donaldson from Sheffield United has strengthened the attack, while Jason Lowe, Joe Pritchard and Erhun Oztumer are the new faces in midfield.

Recent reports suggest that Bolton are looking at the possibility of signing Jack Rodwell on a free transfer.

The former England international, capped 3 times by his country, was released by Sunderland last week and is looking for a new club.

Jack Rodwell

Last campaign was a strange one for Rodwell. The Everton youth academy product played just two games for the recently relegated Black Cats, scoring one goal. The midfielder hasn’t appeared in an official match since September and was expected to leave the Stadium of Light in January.

It would be a huge risk for the Trotters to get Rodwell. First, because he’s been troubled by injuries in the past and second, because of his huge wages.

But let’s look at the story from another angle. The player would be hungry for football and will want to prove himself again, so he’d be motivated to perform above expectations for Bolton.

He might be willing to take a massive cut to his wage, which was said to be £70,000-per-week at Sunderland. Rodwell will want to show the sceptics that he’s still got it. He’s just 27, so there’s more than enough time to push himself back to the top.

After their disastrous performance last year, Bolton need experienced players who can help them fight their way to the top. Rodwell has played over 160 Premier League matches for Sunderland, Everton and Manchester City, he won the title with the Cityzens in 2014 and has played international football for England.

Speaking about his football qualities, the midfielder shouldn’t be underestimated. It’s no coincidence that he was once touted as one of the brightest English youngsters. He’s a goal threat from deep, has a good passing ability and can be quite creative.

Yes, there have been issues with his attitude recently and he’s been bothered by hamstring injuries in the past but he’s worth the risk. Bolton are in need of another fresh face in the midfield and Rodwell could be the answer to their problems. After all, everyone deserves a second chance.
