As per a report from The Mirror, West Ham United are edging closer to securing a £15million deal for Russian striker Fyodor Smolov. Currently playing for FC Krasnodar, Smolov is keen on moving to the Premier League this summer, as per a Sky Sports report.
David Moyes is in dire need of boosting his attacking forces and with the player being open to signing a deal, this seems like a move that the Hammers must complete this summer.
West Ham have endured a dismal season this term and their attackers have failed to live up to the billing. There has been a severe shortage of creative supply which has prevented the club’s strikers from making the desired impact. The likes of Andy Carroll and Javier Hernandez have been rather underwhelming throughout the season.
A deal for Smolov seems like a step in the right direction but the move can avail no benefits if the club do not sign a creative playmaker this summer.
Regardless, 12 goals in 16 Russian Premier League appearances is a good return and Smolov could go on to become an important signing for the club.
With the highly-anticipated FIFA World Cup coming up, it is not surprising to read that Smolov wants to move to the competitive English Premier League. However, the Hammers are currently placed 14th in the league standings and the likelihood of the move might depend on whether or not the club survives in the top-flight beyond the end of this season.
Moyes’ men are exactly 5 points above the drop zone and with 7 games to go, they should survive the drop this season.
However, things do not look good for them and their focus next season should be on ensuring they finish in the top-10. In order to do so, the club must sign Smolov as he could act as the catalyst for a change at West Ham United.
Having a quality option in the ranks is not going to hurt the Hammers and at £15m, he cannot be termed as an expensive signing either.
