According to last year’s report from Football Oranje, Liverpool were one of the host of Europe’s top clubs interested in signing Ajax star Donny van de Beek.
A product of the Ajax academy, Donny van de Beek has been in brilliant form this season. In 23 Eredivisie games, he has managed six goals and seven assists and continues to be a crucial cog of Ajax’s side under Erik ten Hag.
Now that the Dutchman has enjoyed another solid season in the Eredivisie, should Liverpool rekindle their interest in the player?
Absolutely! Liverpool are challenging Manchester City for the Premier League title this season. The Reds have performed extremely well this season, with the front three Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino scoring truckload of goals.
But there have been times when Liverpool have failed to break teams sitting deeper and defending in numbers. Philippe Coutinho was a master in finding those pockets of spaces and creating chances for the team but he left for Barcelona last January, leaving Klopp’s team short of creativity and flair in the final third.
That’s when signing Donny van de Beek would make all sense for Liverpool. He excels in the no.10 role but he can also do a fantastic job in a double-pivot or in a three-man midfield. With his sleek passing and inch-perfect long balls, the Dutchman can play those incisive passes for his teammates in the final third.
He has magical feet which he uses to bamboozle opponents and dictate play by dropping deeper. An extremely gifted operator, Van de Beek acts as a link between the midfield and attacks, whilst also helping his team by arriving late in the box to score goals.
The Dutch midfielder’s defensive work-rate coupled with his agility and composure in front of goal would make him an asset for Liverpool. Effective both in the offensive and defensive aspects of the game, Van de Beek has all the qualities to thrive in the challenging and arguably the best league in the world—the Premier League.
He may not exactly be a like-for-like replacement for Coutinho but his natural abilities could make him a fantastic long-term investment for the Reds.
Despite Liverpool gunning for the title this season, Klopp should start planning for the future and make sure he brings in much-awaited Coutinho’s replacement in the summer.

A player like Van de Beek would bolster the Merseysiders’ attacking ranks further and hence, Klopp should do everything in his powers to sign the Dutchman ahead of the 2019/20 season.
