Manchester United

Go for it Jose – It’s Man United and not Chelsea who badly need this 10-goal French World Cup winner

Why Man United should beat Chelsea to sign Florian Thauvin in January

According to a report from the Metro, Chelsea are keeping tabs on Marseille star Florian Thauvin ahead of a potential bid in January.

Florian Thauvin, 25, has become Marseille’s talisman, scoring 33 goals in 50 Ligue 1 appearances for the French outfit. That form saw him make it to Didier Deschamps’ squad which went on to win the World Cup in the summer.

The Frenchman has managed to replicate last season’s form this season, scoring 10 in 13 so far. With Chelsea interested in Florian Thauvin, Manchester United must rival the Blues for the player’s signature.

Manchester United are clearly in need of reinforcements following a poor start to the new season. The Premier League title has become a distant dream for the Red Devils who are now sixth in the table. In fact, finishing in top four looks to be in jeopardy as Jose Mourinho’s side remain eight points adrift of fifth-placed Arsenal.

Florian Thauvin

United’s defence has come under intense criticism this season due to their schoolboy defending, thereby leaking goals at an alarming rate. Mourinho’s priority has to be shoring up his team’s defence but he should not ignore bolstering the attack either.

Romelu Lukaku has scored twice in last three appearances but overall, he has failed to perform well. Anthony Martial is United’s top scorer with seven goals but he hasn’t got enough support from the likes of Alexis Sanchez, Juan Mata, Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard. United are sorely in need of a right winger with Mata, Lingard and Rashford failing to produce the goods consistently.

Well, the Reds could solve their right-wing woes by signing Florian Thauvin from Marseille. Thauvin had a forgettable spell in England with Newcastle United, where he struggled for form before returning to Marseille on loan just five months later. At Marseille, he has managed to resurrect his career and has now become one of the hottest properties in French football.

The Frenchman is a right winger by trade and loves to cut in from the right onto his left foot and go for a pop at goal. Thauvin can terrorise the opposition with his pace, unpredictability and eye for the spectacular.

He is blessed with a top technique, exquisite dribbling skills, close control and has the ability to light up the scene with moments of individual brilliance. The France international uses his low centre of gravity to good effect and combines it with his commendable upper body strength to ride his way past the defenders.

Suffice to say, someone like Thauvin is capable of turning the game on its head with moments of brilliance. Despite having an array of attackers, United could still do with a bit more speed and directness in the attack, and Thauvin would provide that in abundance. He would also represent a more creative threat than Mata.

Hence, United should do everything in their powers to beat Chelsea for the signature of Thauvin in January.
