Manchester City are literally walking their way to the Premier League title in Pep Guardiola’s second season in England. They have dropped just four points all season, and remain unbeaten in the domestic league but Pep Guardiola cannot rest on these laurels and will have to keep improving the quality of his squad, to maintain this dominance in England.
The manager has a superb squad at his disposal but has a couple of positions he needs to improve and one position in the squad that needs some attention is the central defence. While Argentine star Nicolas Otamendi has been sublime at the back for the league leaders, Guardiola has not been able to field a single name consistently to partner him at the back, which needs to be worked upon.
Skipper Vincent Kompany remains their best option but constant injuries have seen him miss more games than he has started, leaving Guardiola short at the back. John Stones is just back from a lengthy spell on the sidelines but was not too effective at the start of the season while Eliaquim Mangala does not seem to have impressed the manager.
So it does not come as a surprise that City are ready to do what it takes to land a top class CB in the next couple of transfer windows. The likes of Harry Maguire, Jonny Evans and Inigo Martinez have constantly been linked with a move to the Etihad but one player they have been linked with, for who they should do everything to sign is Barcelona defender Samuel Umtiti.
Arguably one of the most consistent CBs in Europe for more than a year now, the French international has cemented a place in the first team for club and country and has been in impeccable form this season for the Catalan giants.
Strong and dominant in the air, the £36m-rated star is a composed defender, with decent technique. He is pro-active, makes interceptions in dangerous areas and is adept at sitting back and sweeping up everything thrown at him.
He is also a threat at the other end of the field and has all the attributes that will make him a big hit in England. Barcelona will be reluctant to sell but Pep Guardiola will not find a better option than the French international to complete his version of Galacticos in Manchester.
At just 24, he is a star in the making if he is not already one, and is one of the very few names that can walk into this Manchester City side. He may cost on the higher side but Guardiola should definitely do all it takes to land him in the next couple of transfer windows.
