Why David Stockdale Would Be A Good Signing For Leeds United

David Stockdale’s future at Brighton and Hove Albion has been described this week as “up in the air” as he decides whether to stay and fight for his place in the Premier League or head off to main suitors Leeds United in the Championship.

Stockdale has undoubted quality and would be a great signing for Leeds if the Elland Road club manage to tempt him to move up north. Former England ‘keeper Rob Green has been Leeds’ no.1 this season but his penchant for the odd mistake remains and fans could want him to be replaced.

Being named in the Championship Team of the Year this season showed how good Stockdale has been. His performances have regularly kept Brighton in games and he has been a big reason they have become a top level team. If Leeds complete his signing, they would have signed a player capable of playing at a higher level for sure.

Leeds should be taking advantage of the fact that, unlike with defenders and midfielders, Premier League teams usually can’t afford to keep more than one top quality goalkeeper in their ranks. So they do tend to become available to Championship teams now and again. Stockdale is undoubtedly capable of playing at the top level and possesses the sort of ability Leeds need in their squad if they are to challenge for the title next season.

David Stockdale is 31 now and has played almost 300 times at various league levels for Darlington, Rotherham United, Fulham, Leicester City, Plymouth Argyle, Ipswich Town, Hull City and of course Brighton. That knowledge and calmness is a very valuable asset at Championship level and would be massive for Leeds in what will ideally be a big promotion push under their new owner.

Having been promoted from this league with Brighton this season he would bring current and relevant knowledge to the Leeds camp on how to get over the line in the promotion race. The fact that he is from Leeds and would be playing for his hometown team means bringing all of his big game experience to them would be a pleasure and would see him complete a full circle in his footballing career.

Leeds may yet lose several important first team players from this year’s squad so any chance they get to improve an individual position should not be passed up.
