Funny: Top 5 Jose Mourinho Moments

Share

Chelsea’s Jose Mourinho is one of the top managers not only in terms of results, but also in terms of the entertainment he provides both on and off the field. Here’s a look at five of his top moments.

5. Dirty Laundry…

Mourinho had been banned by UEFA from having any contact with his Chelsea players during the quarter finals of the Champions League in 2005. Allegedly, he sneaked into the ground early and interacted with the players in the dressing room, also relaying instructions to his assistant Rui Faria, who was supposed to be wearing an earpiece hidden under a woolly hat. According to reports, Mourinho hid in a laundry basket to leave the stadium before the game ended in order to escape sanctions.

4. Mario, O Mario

In this candid interview with CNN’s lead football presenter Pedro Pinto, Mourinho talked about a story on Mario Balotelli from a Champions League game in September 2009, when Inter had travelled to Rubin Kazan. The way Mourinho tells the story is hilarious, and even though it may have been factually incorrect- Balotelli was sent off in the 60thminute of the match and not the 46thit did explain why ‘Super’ Mario was frozen out of the side towards the end of the season.

3. The ‘Special One’

Mourinho had already built up a reputation as a character, and during his introduction, he made the comment that gave him the moniker of the ‘Special One’:

“I’m not a defender of old or new football managers. I believe in good ones and bad ones, those that achieve success and those that don’t. Please don’t call me arrogant, but I‘m a European champion and I think I’m a special one.”

2. The EGG Theory

Mourinho and juicy sound bites go hand in hand, and his first stint at Chelsea was full of them. In one funny explanation, Mourinho commented on club owner Roman Abramovic’s reluctance to splash the cash in the transfer market, comparing it with buying eggs at the supermarket.

“It is omelettes and eggs. No eggs – no omelettes! It depends on the quality of the eggs. In the supermarket you have class one, two or class three eggs and some are more expensive than others and some give you better omelettes. So when the class one eggs are in Waitrose and you cannot go there, you have a problem”

1. Messi Stinks!!!

While the 2011 Copa del Rey final may be remembered for the fracas at the end of the game, which involved Mourinho poking Barcelona’s assistant manager Tito Vilanova in the eye, the funniest moment came a bit earlier. Mourinho made the universal gesture of foul smell when Messi and Dani Alves were near him on the touchline, in what makes for yet another one of Mourinho’s famous moments.
