Forget It Mourinho – Why Manchester United Should Avoid Selling This 26-year Old Italian International

Share

There have been a lot of major issues with Jose Mourinho’s side this season, as the Portuguese boss has struggled to find consistency and rhythm after more than 15 games played as Manchester United boss, and major concerns are starting to pile up for the Red Devils as we speak.

Now, after mediocre performances by its newest stars and the stubbornness of Mourinho that doesn’t allow him to make the needed changes and adjustments, United has been bitten by the injury bug and things are getting worse at Old Trafford right now, as they need to change some plans about the players that might come and go in the upcoming months.

One key piece that fell down with an injury was the veteran Ecuadorian Antonio Valencia, who was being one of the lone bright spots in Mourinho’s starting XI, thriving on the full back position and sending the Italian Matteo Darmian to the bench.

Darmian was one of the players that Louis van Gaal brought for his project when he was in charge of the Red Devils. The Italian failed to live up the expectations and reports are suggesting that he might leave in January, but this move should remain on hold for the foreseeable future, as they’re now lacking depth in this position and could be in major trouble if they let Matteo go.

The 26 year old didn’t convince Mourinho in the preseason and had barely played before Valencia suffered the injury, as he had only played a couple of matches for the UEFA Europa League, a competition that the “Special One” stated that wasn’t important and didn’t plan to invest most of their efforts there.

So far, Darmian has only made 5 appearances for the Red Devils this season, playing the last couple of Premier League matches and actually having a pretty decent performance overall, averaging 2.5 tackles. 5.5 clearances and 3.5 interceptions per game while committing just 1.5 fouls and completing 85.5% of his passes, so he’s not to blame for Manchester United’s poor performances.

Besides, there’s not many right backs available in the market these days, and finding one in January will be an even harder task, especially for a team that’s not playing well at all and coached by a man who’s known for his poor treatment and lack of support to his players.

Mourinho’s taking huge shots at Chris Smalling and Luke Shaw right now, and it won’t be surprising if he starts to do the same with Darmian soon, but it seems that he’s currently stuck with the trio, at least until the end of this season.

Last but not least, Valencia’s injury isn’t that serious and he could return to action sooner than expected, so they definitely should keep Darmian around in the meantime and hope he keeps this nice momentum going while they get their star back. So no, Manchester United should NOT sell Matteo Darmian, at least until this nightmare of a season is on the books.
