Tottenham Hotspur have been the most consistent side in the Premier League over the last two years as they have managed to win more points in the league than any other side in the top flight. However, Mauricio Pochettino has very little to show for his efforts and is now looking to improve the squad to make sure that they have enough firepower next season.
However, they will not find it easy this summer as they are set to lose some of their first team stars to bigger clubs in the country. One such player who is closing in on an exit is versatile midfielder Eric Dier. The 23-year old is not the first choice for Pochettino yet but he is an important part of the squad at the club.
He has constantly been linked with an exit, with Manchester United reportedly ready to meet his valuation of £50m this summer. So should Eric Dier leave? Here are three reasons why Dier is expected to stay back at the English capital for another year.
The Argentine tactician is one of the most respected managers in England and though he is yet to win a title with Spurs, he has shown that his peculiar methods are one of many ways to conquer the Premier League. He has a system of adopting the youngsters in the first team to get the best out of them, by giving them the necessary push and it is the best environment for the 23-year old to grow. Leaving Spurs will need Dier to prove himself from the scratch, and it is better for him to turn into a world class star before quitting the capital city.
Mourinho is at the other end of the spectrum as he rarely gives youngsters enough time to settle into the first team. Though the likes of Marcus Rashford are an exception, his treatment of full-back Luke Shaw is a clear example of how ruthless he can be and Dier has to make sure that he avoids such a situation, which could send his career plummeting down. A move to Manchester United, as exciting as it may be, is just not the right step for the English midfielder.
To top it off, Dier hardly fits into the system at Old Trafford. Strong and athletic, Dier is dominant in the air and is adept at sitting back and defending – something that bodes well with what Mourinho wants from his players. But he is not the player that can handle the pressure of being the deepest midfielder in a Mourinho system as it will need lot more energy and mettle to succeed. United need a player who can act as the foundation for the likes of Paul Pogba to attack and Dier is not the man that United are looking for.
