Forget it Gerrard – Rangers must go all out to hold onto this key 26-year-old amidst Premier League interest

Why Rangers must keep hold of James Tavernier amidst Brighton interest

Rangers right-back James Tavernier is a January target for Premier League outfit Brighton and Hove Albion, reports the Scottish Sun.

Brighton have reignited their interest in Tavernier and sent scouts to watch him during Rangers’ 3-1 Europa League win over Rapid Vienna. Tavernier was outstanding in the Europa League fixture, playing a key role in Rangers’ 3-1 victory and he even scored from the spot.

The 26-year-old, who was appointed the captain by Steven Gerrard, only signed a new contract last month that will keep him at Ibrox until 2022. He appears to be the most improved player under Gerrard and the right-back’s performances have been fantastic this season.

The fact that Brighton boss Chris Hughton is pursuing a right-back could indicate his desire to replace Bruno, who recently turned 38. Bruno has been a fantastic servant for Brighton, working wonders both defensively and offensively. However, the Spaniard has entered the final years of his career and at 38, he cannot cope up with the high demands of the Premier League.

While the Seagulls did sign Martin Montoya in the summer transfer window, Hughton could be looking at Tavernier to beef up his squad in January. However, Rangers must keep hold of Tavernier at all cost. After all, he is undoubtedly one of Rangers’ top players and has improved considerably since Gerrard made him the skipper.

Tavernier has proven to be a leader on and off the pitch and is certainly relishing his new role. He is a great asset going forward and while the 26-year-old remains wanting defensively, he must be credited for improved leaps and bounds. The right-back has been superb for Gerrard’s side in the Scottish Premiership and in the Europa League so far this campaign.

James Tavernier

The Premier League is one of the most exciting competitions across the world. Tavernier is a product of the Newcastle United academy but he just managed two senior appearances before leaving the club permanently in 2014.

Although he could be enticed by the prospect of playing in England again, Gerrard must do everything to rebuff offers from Brighton in January. He is an important player for Rangers and the manager must keep hold of his star skipper.
