Two Replacements For Pedro Caixinha Who Rangers Can Consider

After the sacking of Pedro Caixinha was confirmed at Rangers, the press and the bookmakers moved quickly to install favourites to take over from him at Ibrox.

Billy Davies, Alex McLeish, Graeme Murty and Frank De Boer were all obvious candidates and it’s easy to see why, though this job appears to have come either too early or too late for those particular names.

Other totally unsuitable candidates such as Harry Redknapp, Sam Allardyce, David Moyes and Kenny Miller have been mentioned though I would imagine they are highly unlikely to be under serious consideration anyway. Rangers can count Caixinha as a failed experiment and know now that they need someone who knows this league, has passion as well as talent and truly wants to take over.

Here we look at two such candidates for the hot seat, as Rangers look to make this start to the season nothing but a bump in the road in terms of closing the gap on Celtic:

Derek McInnes (Aberdeen)

The Aberdeen manager was less than happy in seeing his captain Ryan Jack pin his colours to the Rangers mast before last season had even finished, but they had previously enjoyed a very good and reasonably successful working relationship could be rekindled here.

McInnes was wanted by Sunderland in pre-season after David Moyes left the Black Cats, though he decided not to take the job in England. Despite losing Jack to Rangers and Jonny Hayes to Celtic, Aberdeen carried on as they were and looked like the biggest domestic challenge to Celtic this term.

The Dons’ 3-0 home loss to the Parkhead side though showed how big the gap still is and from McInnes’ point of view, I think he knows that in the longer term, if he is to win the Scottish Premiership it is more likely to happen for him in Glasgow.

Alex Neil (Preston North End)

After supposedly failing at Norwich City, Neil was appointed as manager of Preston North End and has been doing a great job. The Lancashire side are flying high in the English Championship, a league better and stronger than the Scottish Premiership, and has experience of the Premier League down south too.

Naturally Neil knows the Scottish leagues inside and out and got the job at Norwich based on his exploits with Hamilton Accies so now that he has more experience behind him, he would not be overawed by the Rangers job.
