Forget Benteke – 3 Replacements Liverpool Should Look To Sign As The Second Choice Striker

Share

Liverpool and Christian Benteke were in the news for the right and the wrong reasons recently. The Big Belgian striker didn’t start the game against Crystal Palace but did come off the bench to “win” a penalty which he converted in the 96th minute of the game.

The win might have rekindled hopes for the Reds to make it into the UEFA Champions League by finishing fourth but the future of the former Aston Villa striker is still not clear at the Merseyside club.

Benteke does not seem to be the player that Jurgen Klopp wants to start with in most games since Divock Origi has become the go to guy in place of Daniel Sturridge. It certainly seems likely that the striker will be leaving Liverpool in the next transfer window and we provide three replacements for the 25-year-old.

Alexander Meier

We all know that Klopp does like to play with a false nine or ten in most games, especially away from home. We have seen how Roberto Firmino has grown under Klopp and the German could well move to the Bundesliga to get another player in.

Alexander Meier was the top scorer in the Bundesliga during the 2014-15 season and at 33-years-old, he might be willing to move for one last shot at glory. He won’t play every game and he would know that, who knows, he could be the effective plan B that Liverpool have required for a long, long time.

Wilfried Bony

The 27-year-old Ivorian made a big money move to Manchester City hoping to score goals a plenty for the side but it hasn’t worked out all that well for the former Swansea City striker. Bony has only netted 10 times since moving to City in 2015.

Granted he probably would get more playing time at Liverpool and his physicality could be something that could work for the Reds. Bony though is somewhat similar to Benteke but he does have a better touch and better movement which could help clinch the deal in his favour.

Mario Mandzukic

Mandzukic does have a lot of experience playing in the top leagues in Europe. He has represented Bayern Munich, Wolfsburg, Atletico Madrid and Juventus, amongst others. The 29-year-old though has been overshadowed by the pairing for Paolo Dybala and Alvaro Morata.

The Croatian could be looking for a chance in scenery once again and he does have the ability to become a success in the Premier League. Mandzukic is great in the air and is a willing runner across the channels. He might not be the cheapest or youngest player but he has proven that he can come good in tough situations and well under Jurgen, he could thrive.
