Food For Thought: Three South American Gems Tottenham Hotspur Should Sign In The Summer

Share

Over the years, the South American continent has become the hub for producing some world-class talents. Some of the finest attackers in the game of football currently, Lionel Messi, Sergio Aguero, Luis Suarez, Gonzalo Higuaín, Alexis Sanchez and the list goes on and on.

So, it is not a surprise that the teams across Europe have been scouting the South American markets extensively to get their hands on the next best talents that will emerge from the region. Tottenham Hotspur too have been known to keeping their eyes on talents coming from these parts with many promising attackers linked with a move to the White Hart Lane over the recent years.

Here we take a look at three gifted footballers from South America, who Tottenham should target in the summer of 2017:

Sebastien Driussi

The 20-year old River Plate forward has been linked with a move to the White Hart Lane in this window, but there has been little progress in terms of negotiations, but Spurs could come back for him in the summer.

Driussi has been in hot form for the Millionarios this season in the Primera Division and has already netted 10 times in 14 appearances this term and finished as the league’s top scorer as the club went into the summer break.

A youth team international for Argentina, Driussi is considered one of the continent’s most talented young footballers and has attracted strong interest from Juventus in the past. Strong in the air, excellent finisher and a good dribbler, the 20-year old is a fine prospect and could turn out to be a brilliant piece of business for Tottenham if signed.

Lucas Alario

In the last 18 months, River Plate star Lucas Alario has made a strong case to be included amongst the very best Argentine attacking talent. The 24-year old joined River Plate from Colon in July 2015 and has had a wonderful year and a half with his new team, scoring some very important goals in the history of the club.

Alario has 6 goals and 1 assist from his 13 Primera Division games this term and due to his goalscoring prowess, he has been earmarked as the next big thing in attack for Argentina and has been linked with a move to Tottenham in the past.

An all-round striker, Alario may not be the strongest in the physical sense, but he is adept at holding up the ball and also good in the air. Alario’s temperament is just as strong as his skills on the pitch. With Tottenham struggling to find a good second striker, Alario could be the way to go in the summer.

Emanuel Mammana

The 20-year old Argentinian defender shares a historic record alongside current Barcelona star Javier Mascherano. They are the only players in the history of the Argentina national team to debut for the country’s senior side before they had made their first team debut at club level.

That is how highly Mammana is regarded in Argentina and the belief that they have in him. Just like Mascherano, he too started off as a midfielder at River Plate but went on to make the centre-back position his own.

Confident on the ball, great technical and passing abilities, combined with great awareness and the ability to be a step ahead of his opponents, Mammana had been linked with several English clubs but ended up moving to Lyon in the past summer, but still remains of interest to Tottenham.
