Why Kevin Wimmer will be an amazing signing for Southampton

Tottenham’s 24-year-old Austrian centre-back Kevin Wimmer is reportedly being pursued by Southampton and the Saints might have to shell out £20million (Daily Mirror) to land the Spurs defender. Tottenham do not see a future for Wimmer at the club, with the experienced pair of Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen doing so well at the London club.

Although the Austrian defender did not get a fair chance at Tottenham, it doesn’t mean he is not good enough to be part of the first team. Wimmer is quite an experienced fellow, having played as the first choice centre-back for FC Koln in the Bundesliga, before being signed by Spurs in 2015. Although the quoted price tag by Tottenham might be a little too high for a player who just made 14 appearances in the Premier League last season, Southampton might actually be getting a decent player in return.  Let’s take a look at why the 24-year-old could turn out to be a great signing for the Saints.

Southampton Need Reinforcements

The Saints are currently on the verge being raided once again with bigger clubs looking to sign their most experienced and best defender, Virgil Van Dijk. The Dutch centre-back is one of the most sought after defenders in Europe and is currently being targeted by Liverpool. Having already lost Jose Fonte to West Ham last season, Southampton will be in utter shambles if Van Dijk decides to leave the St.Mary’s this summer.

Experience From Tottenham

Having spent two seasons at the White Hart Lane under the management of Mauricio Pochettino, Wimmer must have gained a certain amount of knowledge about playing at the top level. Having spent time defending against the likes of Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen in training, the 24-year-old will have learned a thing or two about defending against world class footballers.

Power Packed Potential

At just 24 years of age, Wimmer has plenty of time in his hand to reach his maximum potential. The 6ft 2 in centre-back is enormous in stature and possesses more than decent pace for a central defender. Although the Austrian international’s iffy concentration and lack of technical prowess is a matter of concern, he has plenty of time ahead of him to improve on it.

As Southampton are currently on the lookout for a new manager after having sacked Claude Puel, the incoming manager could straight away welcome the youngster into the first team.
