How Did They Fare: Rangers FC Player Ratings vs Dundee United

Share

For the first time in 25 years, Dundee United recorded their first ever home win over Rangers FC, emerging 2-1 victors in a cracking league encounter on Sunday evening at the Dens Park.

Rangers had narrowly won their first 2 encounters this season but didn’t prove solid enough as they fell to 2 first half goals.

After heading an effort wide in the opening minutes of the clash, an unmarked O’Hara made no mistake putting Paul Hartley’s men ahead in the 13th minute after he met a cut back pass from Ojamaa with a low drive shot.

Rangers couldn’t muster any attempt as a reply and were soon down 2-0 after conceding another goal 4 minutes from halftime. A freekick it was, from just outside their box that was beautifully struck by Holt, as the power on the effort gave Foderingham no chance as he could only push it into his net.

The teams headed down the tunnel with the home team leading 2-0.

Nothing changed for the visitors when play restarted, but they soon halved the deficit when Joe Garner struck a long-range effort in the 62nd minute to give interim manager Graeme Murty some hope.

Harry Forrester came off the bench and almost completed a comeback for Rangers, but he could only blast one high over the bar at the back post. Dundee almost got a 3rd goal but were denied by some reflex goalkeeping from Foderingham.

The game ended 2-1, with a win for the home side.

Here is how the Light Blues are rated as they further lost points and failed to keep up with 2nd placed Aberdeen whom they now trail by 6 points.

Foderingham

Perhaps should have done better to keep out the 2nd goal, but he did well to keep Rangers in the game with a fine save from Wighton in the closing stages.

Rating : 5/10

Hill

Was struggling with the pace of the game and had to be removed after half an hour following a knock he couldn’t shake off.

Rating : 4/10

Hodson

Filled in for Wallace at left-back and while he didn’t put a wrong foot forward, he didn’t have an outstanding game either.

Rating : 5/10

Tavernier

While he often had a lot to do defensively, the right-back offered a lot of support to the attack but could only ‘come close’ to changing the scoreline with an effort.

Rating : 5/10

Kiernan

Returned to action but wasn’t all that convincing with his performance as he often lost possession.

Rating : 5/10

Halliday

Much more was expected from him in the middle of the park than causal ball distribution.

Rating : 5/10

Hyndman

Set up Garner’s goal and seemed like the only player in a Rangers Jersey trying and willing to grind out a result.

Rating : 6/10

Waghorn

Was lucky to remain on the pitch after a senseless foul late in the game.

That summed up how poor he was all-game as he failed to make any meaningful contribution to the play.

Rating : 4/10

McKay

Despite looking brilliant, his lack of experience was there for all to see, and he was hauled off towards the end of the game as an equalizer was sought.

Rating : 5/10

Miller

Impressive display from him as he came close to grabbing a goal on few occasions, but it wasn’t meant to be.

Rating : 6/10

Garner

Poor in the first half, squandering a fine chance but got a great goal to give Rangers a chance.

Rating : 7/10

SUBSTITUTES

Wilson

Had an hour to impress but could only concede a foul that led to Dundee’s 2nd.

Rating : 4/10

Holt

Replaced Halliday late on.

Rating : Not Applicable

Forrester

Squandered a great chance to put Rangers level late in the game.

Rating : Not Applicable
