Leeds United returned to the top of the Championship with a 2-1 win over Swansea City at Elland Road, after Norwich City’s 3-1 loss to Preston North End. Pontus Jansson and Jack Harrison scored the goal for the home side, while Oliver McBurnie did pull one back for the visitors late on.
Around the 20th minute of the game, Jansson, who was celebrating his 28th birthday, reacted well to Ezgjan Alioski’s blocked shot, firing the Peacocks ahead from 12 yards out with a shot towards the bottom corner.
Fourteen minutes later, Alioski did well to create a goal-scoring chance, and Harrison was there to finish at the near post.
The Welsh club did pull one back three minutes from time when Luke Ayling’s clumsy challenge on Joel Asoro ended in a penalty for the away side. All in all, the home side deserved the win, having had 19 attempts on goal compared to Swansea’s 9. They were very good in possession and looked positive in the final third.
They are back on top of the table now after Norwich’s shock result at Preston. Bielsa and his boys are back where they belong. Leeds’ next game is after 10 days at home to Fulham since there is no FA Cup action to deal with. Hence, the Peacocks will get a proper chance to rest ahead of a crucial phase of the season.
Here’s how their fans reacted after beating Swansea City:
