Championship leaders Leeds United lost their second game in a row when Nottingham Forest stunned them 4-2 at the City Ground on New Year’s Day. Goals from Jack Colback (x2), Daryl Murphy and Ben Osborn was enough for the home team to get the win.
Jack Clarke and Ezgjan Alioski did score for the away team but it was not enough to even rescue a point. The Peacocks were down to 10 men after 42 minutes when Kalvin Phillips was sent off for a terrible lunging tackle on Adlene Guedioura.
A dreadful backpass from Adam Forshaw invited Colback to chase the lost cause and open the scoring in the seventh minute. After being down by a man, Leeds showed great resilience and fight. Eventually, substitute Jack Clark equalised in the 52nd minute and Alioski put them ahead in the 64th minute to really mark their ambitions of being a champion team.
However, the extra man advantage was used by the Forest team when they scored three goals in the space of eight minutes to seal the points. Firstly, it was Colback who made it 2-2 with a tidy finish from 16 yards in the 69th minute. Then three minutes later, it was a fine headed finish from Murphy that put the home side ahead.
Ben Osborn’s stunning strike in the 76th minute ended a winless run of five games for Aitor Karanka’s men. This result puts them at seventh in the table, four points behind the playoff spots.
On the other hand, Leeds stay on top as Norwich City managed to only grab a point from their game. However, the lead it trimmed to two points.
