Everton did not have the brightest start to their Premier League campaign after a dull 0-0 draw at Selhurst Park against Crystal Palace.
To add insult to injury, Andre Gomes came off injured and there were already doubts about his performances in the coming season without Idrissa Gueye.
Gueye gave a lot of balance to that midfield because of his ability to intercept and break up the play. Everton looked very off the pace and looked very vulnerable in midfield in their game against Palace and this will be a cause for worry.
They signed Fabian Delph but he’s also currently nursing an injury and that’ll be a real concern in the long run because Delph has struggled with fitness throughout his career.
One player that they were linked with and will be looking back on regret with is Abdoulaye Doucoure, who wouldn’t have been perfect but would at the very least give them an engine in midfield.
Gueye played just in front of the defence and cleaned up things and while Doucoure is different cause he provides more of an attacking threat, he’d at the very least give them some legs in midfield.
Everton are seriously lacking that in midfield currently and all of their hopes of a higher finish will go down with them without a player like Doucoure. They’ve signed Jean Philippe Gbamin, who could do a job in that area.
Everton have not been afraid to spend a lot of money in the transfer market in recent seasons but there seems to always be an area of weakness in every department after they strengthen in other areas.
Last season their forwards options were weak and they’ve addressed that area but they’ve lost Kurt Zouma and Idrissa Gueye and haven’t addressed those issues properly and it seems like they keep falling short in every season with different areas, which will hurt the balance of the team.

Everton will be facing Watford at Goodison Park on Saturday and will need to get off and running with a winning start. Anything less and serious questions will be asked of Marco Silva.
