Manchester United have made a wise move by not signing this Premier League defender for £45m – Agreed?

Why Man United are lucky to have missed out on signing Issa Diop?

Manchester United needed to make some moves this summer after a couple of poor transfer windows.

Jose Mourinho was unable to land all his targets during his final season at the club (h/t Daily Mail).

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer replaced the Portuguese and has a huge job on his hands in rebuilding the Red Devils.

Issa Diop

The Manchester United legend oversaw Romelu Lukaku’s but has done well to keep most of the squad intact.

David de Gea is still a Red Devil while the club made a couple of fantastic signings in Harry Maguire and Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

The pair were excellent in the opening day win over Chelsea, but the Red Devils could have signed another centre-back instead of Maguire.

The Sun claims that Issa Diop of West Ham was linked with a £45m move in the summer, but the Red Devils ultimately chose to sign the Leicester City centre-back for £80m.

United made a better decision in landing Maguire

Although the Red Devils paid a record sum to land a defender this summer, Maguire has been one of the best in his position since joining Leicester from Hull City.

Harry Maguire

The England centre-back was one of the stars in the Three Lions’ World Cup campaign too, and from his first showing, he seems like a natural in the United shirt.

Diop is a quality defender but Manchester United needed some authority at the back. Maguire will grow into his role at Old Trafford and has the potential to improve further.

The West Ham defender is only 22 and needs to be tested further in the Premier League.

There have been several instances of players having a great first season and then trailing off later.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

The former Toulouse star could be ready for a big move in a season or two, and it will be interesting to see how he performs in his second Premier League season.

Maguire looks to be the finished article at the moment and seems set to become one of the best centre-backs in the world.

Verdict

United could have opted for the cheaper player in the summer, but they had to sign someone who gives them an instant upgrade.

Maguire playing alongside Victor Lindelof is a better pairing than Diop with the Swedish defender, and the Red Devils certainly made the right decision in going for the Englishman.
