Everton opinion: Should Everton make a move for Hector Herrera?

Everton have had an up and down season so far but are currently placed 10th in the Premier League. The Toffees’ aim has always been to make it into the top 7 of the league to qualify for Europe but Marco Silva’s men are unlikely to achieve that this campaign.

The Merseysiders need to strengthen their midfield in the summer, especially with Andre Gomes’ loan deal expiring and Idrissa Gueye’s future uncertain. The Toffees will need an experienced man in the middle of the park and Hector Herrera would be a magnificent option to consider.

Currently at Porto, Herrera is into the last few months of his contract and will be available for free in the summer. Everton will have to be quick to bag their man in the summer.

Herrera came through the ranks at local club Pachuca before making his senior debut in 2010. After 3 years and 52 appearances for the club, the 28 year old moved to Portuguese giants Porto in 2013 and has since been a mainstay at the club.

The Mexican international has the ability to play anywhere across the midfield and his versatility gives his manager a lot of options. Herrera thrives with the ball and loves to drive into the opposition half when in possession. He also has the eye to pick out a teammate from deep.

Despite his attacking prowess, Herrera has the positional awareness and senses danger effortlessly, thereby dropping back into a deeper position when under attack.

The 28-year-old is a strong and powerful presence in the middle of the park and his tough and robust tackling makes him the sort of midfielder that would dominate games in the Premier League.

Herrera averages 2.1 tackles per game, 1.2 interceptions per game and 1.7 successful aerial duels per 90 minutes. His offensive numbers are impressive too as he averages 1.3 shots per game and 1.1 key passes per game with a brilliant passing accuracy of over 85%.

With over 275 appearances for club and country, Herrera isn’t short of experience and he would help any team with his leadership skills. His already successful career so far will hit the next level if he does decide to move to the Premier League.

Conclusion

Everton need a strong, skilful and experienced man in the midfield and Hector Herrera fits the bill perfectly. His experience at the top level will prove to be vital and his leadership skills are sure to help the youngsters at the club succeed.

With the added bonus of a free transfer, Everton would be foolish to ignore Herrera in the summer.
