Why Everton should hold onto Idrissa Gana Gueye amidst PSG interest

According to the Sun, French giants Paris Saint-Germain have set their sights on Everton midfielder Idrissa Gana Gueye to strengthen their midfield.

The report claims that the Ligue 1 champions are keen to add another holding midfielder to their squad to cover for the loss of Adrien Rabbit, who is likely to head for the exit door following a contract dispute.

PSG have also shortlisted Liverpool’s Fabinho and Southampton’s Mario Lemina as potential replacements but the Merseysiders are unlikely to sell one of their key players to a Champions League rival. PSG’s representatives have held talks with the agent of Idrissa Gueye and a move might well be on the cards in January. (h/t Sun)

The 29-year-old Senegalese star has been one of the standout performers for Marco Silva’s side in the Premier League this season. Along with Barcelona loanee Andre Gomes, Gueye has been a key figure for the Toffees in central midfield, excelling with his flawless passing and immaculate distribution.

After a lacklustre start to the season, the midfield pairing of Idrissa Gueye and Andre Gomes has been the driving force behind Everton’s resurgence in the Premier League in the last couple of months. Both players have worked very effectively in tandem and have complemented each other well.

The 29-year-old’s lively presence in a box-to-role has not only reduced the pressure on the defenders but has also helped the team build the play from the midfield. Gueye has also impressed a lot with his high work rate, tenacity and pressing off the ball.

The Senegalese international averages 53.7 passes per game with an accuracy of 85.3%. Furthermore, he averages 4.4 tackles and 2.2 interceptions per game, figures which should even make a centre-back proud.

To sum it up, he is one of the key players at the club and losing him midway through the season can deal a huge blow to Everton’s chances of securing a top-six finish. Another thing is that the Toffees do not have an ideal replacement for the Senegalese ace.

Tom Davies has failed to establish himself as a regular face at Goodison Park while Morgan Schneiderlin has been frozen out of the first-team after a series of lacklustre displays earlier in the season.

PSG have the financial muscle to snap up the best players in the world but the French outfit can only spend a maximum of £18million in January to comply with the Financial Fair Play rules. Hence, Everton should slap a huge price tag on their prized asset to keep the suitors at bay.
