According to a report in Sun Football, Premier League side Everton are lining up a £25m move for Espanyol striker Borja Iglesias. Manager Marco Silva is desperate for a quality striker who can lead the line week in week out, allowing Richarlison to play in his favoured wide position.
Iglesias has been in good form this season for the Catalan side, scoring 9 goals and supplying 2 assists in La Liga and helping his team in the top half of the table so far.
He came into prominence after scoring heavily for Celta Vigo’s B team in the previous four campaigns. He joined Espanyol last summer and has led the line well.
Here’s why Everton should do everything to get the Spaniard sooner than later:
After the appointment of Marco Silva in the summer, it was clear that the Everton hierarchy are in for a long-term project under the Portuguese. They made some good signings in the summer to strengthen various areas of the pitch. However, there is one position which still needs improvements – the centre-forward role.
Since the departure of Romelu Lukaku in the summer of 2017, the Toffees have struggled to replace the Belgian. Cenk Tosun, Oumar Niasse and Dominic Calvert-Lewin aren’t doing enough to be consistent in front of the goal and lead the line week in week out.
As a result, Silva has been force-handed to play Richarlison as a striker when we clearly know that the Brazilian’s favoured position is left-wing, from where he can cut in and be a threat.
Though the former Watford man is doing a decent job battling with the opposition centre-backs, it is not helping the cause in terms of the bigger picture. Hence, Everton need someone who can score goals ruthlessly, lead the line well and link up with the fellow attackers on the pitch.
Borja Iglesias is one such No.9 whose expertise in finding the back of the net is enhancing with every passing game. The good thing about him is that he can create chances as well, which is such a bonus for a team who have talented players.

Moreover, his height (187cm) and physicality enables him to battle with the centre-backs aerially and be a genuine target man. Simultaneously, he is a lethal asset to have from set-pieces. All in all, Iglesias looks a perfect fit for the Marco Silva system and if this move happens, it will be great for the blue side of Merseyside.
