Why Alex Iwobi is proving to be a smart acquisition for Everton

Everton needed to get back to winning ways after losing to Aston Villa, and that is exactly what they did at Goodison Park as they defeated Wolves 3-2 on Sunday.

Richarlison had opened the scoring for Everton in the fifth minute, but Wolves weren’t behind for long though, as Adama Traore did well down the right-hand side to feed Romain Saiss, who prodded home after the ball deflected off Seamus Coleman.

Everton, though, hit back in the 11th minute, as Alex Iwobi got his first goal for the Toffees, heading in from a Gylfi Sigurdsson cross. Raul Jimenez equalised for the visitors with 15 minutes left in the game.

Everton didn’t give up and responded quickly, as Lucas Digne’s left-wing cross was met fiercely by Richarlison to seal all three points for the home side.

One of the positives for the Toffees against Wolves on Sunday was Alex Iwobi. The Nigerian joined Everton from Arsenal in the summer transfer window, signing a five-year deal worth up to £34m at the Goodison Park. And he hasn’t taken much time in making an impact for his new club.

The 23-year-old opened his goal account for Everton against Lincoln City last week with a header and he also found the target against Wolves with his head in Sunday’s Premier League outing. Two goals in two outings should have mightily boosted Iwobi’s confidence.

Although Iwobi made 149 appearances for Arsenal’s first-team over a six-year period, he only managed 15 goals and 27 assists. Marco Silva, however, has a good track record of developing young attacking players and can count the improvement of Richarlison and Dominic Calvert-Lewin as two recent success stories.

The Lagos-born player has played in numerous positions throughout his career, including both wings as well as central and attacking midfield.

Silva has the luxury of using him in different positions as per a game’s need. And going by his performances in the first few games of the new campaign, the Goodison Park faithful should be really pleased.

Verdict

A transfer fee of £34m is a relatively low price in the current market, and especially so when it comes to homegrown players transferring between Premier League clubs.

At the age of 23, Iwobi certainly has his best years ahead of him and Silva could be the right manager to unlock his true potential.
