Frank Lampard scored both the equalizer and the winner against Everton after the Toffees went ahead after just 1 minute thanks to a goal from Steven Pienaar.
It was not all easy for the Blues who started the game 14 points behind runaway leaders Manchester United. They were also up against an Everton side who were unbeaten this season at home. In the absence of John Terry, Frank Lampard was the stand in captain for the Blues and Petr Cech made his 400th appearance but it was one he would like to forget.
But in all truth, the opening 15 minutes were dominated by Everton. They had the best start to the match and would have backed themselves up to get at least one point if not 3 at that time.
The goal, though, was quality. Steven Pienaar latched on to Eden Hazard’s error and played a glorious pass for the overlapping Phil Jagielka. The shot hit the post and the ball pinged back for Pienaar who had continued his run and swept home the rebound to send the home supporters delirious.
Chelsea were all over the place for the next 15 odd minutes but their keeper Cech managed to get down in a heartbeat to push away Leon Osman’s low screamer, before he somehow managed to get a fingertip to a Nikica Jelavic effort that seemed certain to find the far corner.
Next, Nico Jelavic hit the crossbar from a freekick just outside the box and the Chelsea keeper gave up as he was left stranded in the middle. But to his delight the ball hit the crossbar.
Ramires struggled against Baines on the flank and Torres was poor for most of the half. Chelsea’s equalizer was surprising for the fans as these two players combined well to set up Frank Lampard. Torres who was under pressure from Baines on the right wing, did well to beat him and gave a good pass to Ramires who was on the edge of the box. Ramires wasted no time and crossed it in immediately and Frank Lampard scored the equalizer from a good header.
The second half started well for Chelsea though they lost Cech during half time who complained of a thigh problem. He was replaced by second choice keeper Turnbull. Everton would have hoped to test him more but aside from an Osman shot saved to his left, Toffees did not test Ross Turnbull enough.
There were chances on both sides of the pitch. Jelavic hit the post making it the third time the ball hit the crossbar on the night for Everton. On the other side, a beautiful chip from David Luiz found a free Fernando Torres in the box but his poor first touch denied Chelsea the lead as the ball landed safely in the keepers hands.
But the winner came for the Blues on 72′. It was another right place at the right time moment for Lapmard.Mata was instrumental, crossing for Hazard to nod down before Lampard instinctively volleyed home after the Spaniard’s initial effort had been palmed back into the six-yard box.
Lampard broke another record as he scored 5 goals in each of his last 16 seasons in EPL and is only 4 away to become the first man to score 10 goals in 10 season for a club in EPL.
Chelsea then held off pressure from Everton in the last quarter hour to hold on their nerve to win an entertaining game.
