If there’s one thing that Everton Football Club can pride themselves on, it is their youth set-up. The Everton youth conveyor belt has churned out some incredible talents over the years, in a list headed by current player Wayne Rooney. A lot of other players like Ross Barkley, Richard Dunne, Leon Osman, Shkodran Mustafi and many more owe their formative footballing years to the Everton academy that helped mould themselves into the stars that they are today.
This season too has seen a fair share of Everton youth players feature for the team, including the likes of Tom Davies. Other youngsters who have seen their stock rise this season include Calvert-Lewin and Mason Holgate. One youth player, however, who Everton have on loan at Nottingham Forest is Kieran Dowell and they need him back next season if they warrant an extra dimension while attacking.
First up, who is Kieran Dowell? The 20-year-old is an Everton academy graduate who has been excellent on loan at Nottingham Forest, playing as an attacking midfielder, with an excellent eye for the goal.
Dowell has gone on to hit double figures for the club in just over 30 appearances – a superb return for a player who’s just finished his teenage years in a league that is notorious for being physically demanding.
Also, bringing Dowell into the squad now is perfect because of the fact that Everton lack creativity in midfield. Wayne Rooney isn’t the same workhorse that he used to be and the likes of Gylfi Sigurdsson and Davy Klaasen aren’t stepping up for the club.
Dowell can be the spark that they require and with Sam Allardyce not shunning away from giving youngsters a chance, this is the perfect opportunity for the player to move back to Everton.
Everton are in dire need of players who understand the pride of the badge that they wear and Dowell is the perfect candidate. In a team of mismatched stars, a youth product could be the answer to their problems up front. Dowell’s inclusion is a gamble worth taking considering his very young age and great ability.
