Things are not looking good for Jose Mourinho and Manchester United as the club languish at 10th place, as the international break dawns upon us. United have only been able to pick up two wins out of the opening four games of the season.
The Red Devils were humbled at the hands of Tottenham Hotspur, a game where they lacked intensity, urgency and creativity going forward. Mourinho opted a very pragmatic approach against Spurs, with midfielder Ander Herrera taking up the role of a third centre-back. While Mourinho is said to be a huge admirer of the player, the manager has left it up to Ed Woodward, executive chairman, to handle the negotiations.
“I don’t belong in the process of discussing deals with the players and negotiations with agents,’ said Mourinho. ‘I never did that, it’s something that I don’t even like to do. ‘I would be a bad negotiator; I would give everything to the players. So I don’t belong to that.” (Metro)
Manchester United offered Marouane Fellaini a new contract but failed to do the same with Ander Herrera. At this stage, it seems wise for the midfielder to leave the club in January. Given that Manchester United now possess Paul Pogba, Fred, Nemanja Matic, Marouane Fellaini and Jesse Lingard in the middle of the park, regular match time is not a guarantee for Ander Herrera.
He should leave the club in January and search for regular game time elsewhere. Herrera is a talented and hard-working midfielder whose never say die attitude often reaps the praises. He is capable of playing in a number of different systems and formations.

At the age of 29, Herrera still has a few more years of peak football to play and it should not go waste. Manchester United look like they are on a downward spiral and this seems like the right time for the Spanish midfielder to leave the club.
