Why Everton cashing in on Kevin Mirallas would be ideal for all parties

According to claims from Belgian news outlet Le Soir, as cited by the Liverpool Echo, out-of-favour Everton star Kevin Mirallas is the subject of interest from a couple of Belgian clubs. 

The same report suggests that Royal Antwerp and Club Brugge are set to make an attempt to sign the 31-year-old forward before the closure of the continental transfer window on September 2. 

Mirallas, who joined Everton from Olympiacos for a fee of £6million back in the summer of 2012, was an instant hit at Goodison Park upon his arrival in Merseyside but he the Belgian currently finds himself way down the pecking order.

The versatile attacker was one of the mainstays of the Toffees’ forward line for five seasons in the Premier League, where he terrorised defences with his pace, guile, proficiency in one-on-one situations and ability to score goals. 

However, things have gone downhill for Mirallas over the past couple of seasons after he fell out of favour since the start of the 2017-18 campaign.

The Belgian spent time on loan at his former club Olympiacos before the arrival of new manager Marco Silva last summer closed all routes of an unlikely return to the first-team fold. 

The 31-year-old, who boasts of an envious tally of 38 goals and 34 assists in 186 appearances in all competitions, is bound to have his name sculpted as one of the greats to have graced the game at Goodison Park since the turn of the century, although the veteran has turned into a rather forgotten figure lost in the cold in recent times. 

The arrival of new signings Theo Walcott, Bernard, Richarlison, Moise Kean and Alex Iwobi, coupled with Mirallas’ lack of form and the managerial change, have brought down the shutters on the Belgian’s illustrious and distinguished spell at Everton. 

After being frozen out of the first-team scheme of things at Everton, the 60-cap Belgian international decided to try his luck at Fiorentina in the Serie A last season but 2 goals in 30 appearances clearly indicated that he is past his prime and a mere shadow of his former influential self at Goodison Park. 

Now, with only a year remaining on his current contract at Everton, the Toffees need to make a call on his future before the transfer deadline to avoid losing him on a free transfer next summer.

Given his advancing years and the current contract situation, Mirallas is unlikely to command a big fee but it still makes perfect sense for Everton to offload him and happily pocket whatever they recoup from his sale. 

To put things into perspective, Kevin Mirallas has enjoyed enough fruitful seasons at the highest level in Europe and this summer is probably the right time for him to return to his homeland, fifteen years after he had left his boyhood club Standard Liege as a promising youngster. 

The 31-year-old might not have a future at Everton but he still has what it takes to cut the mustard in some of the lower leagues in Europe and a return to Belgium could see him get a hero’s welcome and, more importantly, offer him a permanent solution to end his travails.
