How England’s Midfield Will Look Like At The Euros? Tottenham And Liverpool Stars To Start For Roy Hodgson’s Team

Share

Roy Hodgson did pull off a couple of surprises with his England squad for the European Championships. Everyone was surprised with the inclusion of Marcus Rashford but one more inclusion in the squad was a bit of a shocker, that was of Jack Wilshere who only played one game all season for Arsenal.

The shocking omission of Danny Drinkwater is another decision that left many with their head scratching, but this is the England team that Roy has chosen and everyone has to live with it.

England have not done all that well in international tournaments for a number of years, but this time they could really do well, seeing as to how many players were chosen due to their form, well except maybe Wilshere and Jordan Henderson.

England’s midfield selection includes Ross Barkley, Dele Alli, Eric Dier, James Milner, Adam Lallana and Raheem Sterling, along with Henderson and Wilshere.

It will be a tough decision to decide which player starts and which does not as only the likes of Milner, Alli and Dier have had good seasons for their respective clubs, while the others have either had problems with injuries or have been in poor touch all season long.

The midfield is the most important part of the team as they look to help the defense as well as the attack, when needed and we look ahead to some of the tougher group games for England – they do face Wales – and predict just what should be the starting midfield quarter or trio.

Decision making time for Roy

The English manager would have to put out his best team if his side are to make it out of the group and also do well in the knockout round. Eric Dier has to start whichever way the team does come out and play. Be it a four-man midfield or a three-man combination, the Tottenham star must be in the squad since he is the best defensive midfielder in the English team.

In a three-man midfield, there would be a need to play another central midfielder for support and that slot should be filled in by James Milner, who had an incredible season for Liverpool, even though he did not win much for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

The other player in the midfield should be Ross Barkley, who can link up with the attack, Dele Alli would play just behind the striker or strikers and he too should start in the attack for England.

If it is a four-man midfield, the center of midfield should contain Milner and Dier. The two men out wide could be Adam Lallana and Raheem Sterling or even Ross Barkley in place of Lallana, but that would be a bit of an imbalance as neither player is an out and out wide player.

The trio would actually have a better balance, but it is up to Roy to decide who does what in the Euros and hopefully the manager can get more things right than wrong.
