West Brom 2-2 Nottingham Forest: Baggies secure draw with late penalty

West Brom scored a late equaliser as they drew against stubborn Nottingham Forest side 2-2. While the opening couple of minutes were quite competitive, West Brom slowly began to take control of possession.

Unfortunately for them, in the 6th minute, some shabby passing at back gifted the ball to the charging Forest players. Some brilliant play from Jack Colback and Lewis Grabban led them into the box and a pass across found Ryan Yates at the far post.

He tried to cut it back again but it came off Stefan Johansen who was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. He knew nothing about it but was credited with the own goal as Yates’ touch was actually a cut-back. Forest took the lead at the Hawthorns and the Baggies fans expected an immediate response.

As the half wore on, West Brom continued to dominate possession but with no real threat to Costel Pantilimon’s goal. A reaction from West Brom was very much on the cards in the 2nd half.

In the second period, the Baggies continued to dominate the possession. They were beginning to create a lot of chances as well and it seemed like the manager’s half-time talk had certainly worked.

In the 54th minute, a ball in from the left led to a mad tussle inside the Forest box. The ball emerged from the right side through Harper again and after a couple of deflections, Jacob Murphy smashed the ball in past Pantilimon.

Their lead didn’t last very long though as it took Forest just 11 minutes to equalise. Forest took a traditional long throw from the left and it was chested down in the middle of the box by Grabban. An arriving Yates, gratefully took the chance to smash the ball to put the Reds back in the driving seat.

In the 89th minute though, a lung-bursting run from Dwight Gayle was met by a charging Benalouane, who was judged to have tripped the striker and hence West Brom were awarded a late penalty to try and save a point.

Jay Rodriguez stepped up to take the spot-kick and although Pantilimon guessed the right way, the low driven shot had enough to beat the keeper and level the score-line. The game ended 2-2 as both teams had to settle for just a point.

Here’s how some infuriated Baggies fans reacted to the draw:
