Sheffield United’s £1m deal for Championship star makes complete sense and here’s why

Why Jack Robinson would be a good move for Sheffield United

According to Daily Mail, Sheffield United are closing in on the £1m capture of Nottingham Forest defender Jack Robinson.

Jack Robinson, 26, joined Nottingham Forest in the summer of 2018 on a free transfer from Championship rivals QPR. He has made 19 appearances for Forest this season, with his contract due to expire in the summer.

He would be the Blades’ second signing of the transfer window after former Manchester City midfielder Jack Rodwell joined on a short-term deal this month.

Sheffield United have enjoyed an impressive return to the top-flight and are currently 7th in the table. They have performed very well under Chris Wilder and remain in the hunt for a European spot.

As evident from a defensive record of 22 goals conceded in 23 games so far, stability at the back has been one of the hallmarks of the Blades’ fantastic run in the top-flight this season.

But as there’s little depth in defence, Wilder has been forced to use the same back-three of Jack O’Connell, Chris Basham and John Egan in almost all of their fixtures so far.

Wing-backs George Baldock and Enda Stevens have played every single game so far, and while Baldock has a back-up in Kieron Freeman, Stevens doesn’t have one. Thus, Wilder could find himself in a spot of bother if Stevens gets sidelined with an injury or picks up a suspension.

This is where the signing of Jack Robinson makes sense for United. The 26-year-old can play as a left-back and as a centre-back and has featured for Liverpool in the Premier League and the Europa League. He made 3 and 2 appearances respectively in the PL and the UEL during his time at Anfield.

The former England Under-21 international would act as a backup for Stevens, whilst his versatility to operate in central defence should come handy for Wilder.

Verdict

United must add depth to their defensive ranks if they are to avoid a potential injury crisis at the back during the second half of the season. Hence, Wilder is doing the right thing by signing Robinson from Nottingham Forest.
