The EFL Championship 2017/18 season has once again been an action-packed ride. Wolverhampton Wanderers have sealed promotion back to the Premier League, having been crowned the champions of the English second division, while the battle for the second spot is going until the last game, with Cardiff City and Fulham battling it out.
At the other end of the table, Sunderland have been relegated to the League One, with the likes of Bolton Wanderers and Burton Albion also looking to be headed for the doom. In a season that has seen a number of stars being made, with some scintillating displays, here we pick out the best playing XI from the EFL Championship for the season 2017/18.
Signed on a free transfer in the summer by the champions, the 31-year-old English shot stopper has been pivotal in the Wolves’ rise to the top. Ruddy has managed a total of 24 clean sheets in 45 Championship appearances this term, conceding just 36 times.
The 25-year-old right-back has been a key cog in Slavisa Jokanovic’s Fulham outfit, aiding their promotion bid. Fredericks has featured in 43 games in the Championship this season contributing with 7 assists, adding an alternate dimension to the Cottagers’ forward play.
A central midfielder turned central defender, the Wolves man took to his new position well and provided the solid base for the team to build upon. Leading from the front, the former Liverpool man has been immense and is deserving of a spot in the best XI.
Another cornerstone on which the Wolves’ successful campaign was built upon, Portuguese defender Willy Boly was a proverbial rock at the back for the champions and played a huge role in them enjoying the best defensive record in the division.
The rising star of the EFL Championship, Fulham’s teenage sensation Ryan Sessegnon has continued from where he left in the 2016/17 campaign. Fifteen goals and six assists in 47 appearances across all competitions for the 17-year-old this season is a brilliant record for sure.
Signed for a club record fee of £15.8m in the summer, the Portuguese midfielder has repaid every penny with some brilliant displays in the centre of the park for the champions. An ever-present in the line-up when fit, the 21-year-old has provided the team with great control over the proceedings and has also chipped in with 6 goals in 40 appearances in the league.
The Fulham captain has led his team from the front with some highly influential displays. Cairney, this season, has scored 4 times and assisted 5 more in 32 appearances in the English second division, excelling in a pivot position in the midfield.
One of the breakthrough stars of the 2017/18 season, the Norwich City midfielder has enjoyed a great campaign on a personal level. The 21-year-old has come up with amazing returns of 15 goals and 11 assists in 47 appearances across all competitions, well and truly cementing his status as a star in the making.
The leading goalscorer in the English second division with 20 goals to his name from 38 appearances along with 3 assists, Derby County talisman Matej Vydra is an easy pick here.
The third highest goalscorer in the EFL Championship, 25-year-old Bobby Reid has had a stellar season so far. The Bristol City forward has netted 19 times in the league and has also set up 7 goals, contributing in a big way to help the Robins push for a top-half finish.
After helping Sheffield United achieve promotion from the League One to the Championship, the 33-year old has continued to plunder goals and has netted 18 goals this season for the Blades, along with 4 assists in 37 appearances.
