Barring the most amazing of footballing miracles, Leeds United’s chances of making to the playoffs are now over, after they failed to beat Norwich City last week.
Their excellent comeback from 3-0 down to draw 3-3 against the Canaries at least showed that their fighting spirit is still alive and they will want to go out on a high. Wigan are already relegated and while they may play with freedom and very little fear, they are not expected to realistically offer a massive challenge. So if Leeds truly want one last win before much of this team is disbanded, it’s there for the taking.
A lot of goalkeepers are being mentioned as alternatives for Leeds next year in goal, but for now, the former England man has the gloves and will start this game.
A solid enough season at right-back comes to an end for Ayling, who will look to get forward and attack Wigan’s left side.
Although their efforts have ultimately proven not quite enough, Leeds appear to have got away with Liam Cooper’s long ban by keeping Bartley and Jansson fit. Hence both can play together one last time.
Leeds fans are hoping that the big Swede stays on a permanent basis as he has been a huge hit this season. He will start this game for sure.
Berardi got the shirt last week, but the young man perhaps deserves another appearance at left-back.
A cracking season for the young midfielder has won many admirers and he will start once again for Leeds in the midfield.
May perhaps win his place back for the final game at the expense of O’Kane. Should start alongside Vieira.
The former Oxford winger has had a good season but needs to add more goals to his game if he wishes to play in the top division. A 4th league goal of the season here would help.
The classy Spaniard may get the time he desires to pick out key passes, something Wood loves to feed on.
Doukara or Dallas? The former may just get a recall here and would be asked to hit Wigan hard from the start.
Without Wood scoring goals, Leeds tend to lose! Getting good service from the full-backs and midfield is vital but he usually needs only one chance to score.
