Done – Manchester United Have Agreed £80,000-a-week Deal For Midfielder

Jose Mourinho’s Red Devils have secured Marouane Fellaini to a lengthened contract at Old Trafford after triggering the club’s option of a 12-month extension to his current deal, where he earns £80,000-a-week.

Reports have confirmed that Fellaini, a £27.5 million signing on the final transfer day from Everton in August 2013, signed the contract last month after being reassured by manager Mourinho and has hinted that he is to remain an important figure in his plans in the future.

Mourinho had made it pretty clear to Fellaini and the United hierarchy that he would not be entertaining any offers for the 29-year old midfielder, who scored the club’s second goal in Tuesday’s 2-0 EFL Cup semifinal first-leg victory over Hull City at Old Trafford with a header that took his side one step closer to Wembley.

Fellaini has had to overcome negativity from his own teams supporters in order to fit himself into Mourinho’s squad, with the Belgian hugging his manager on the touchline following his goal against Hull to give a visible signal of his respect for the Portuguese coach.

With Morgan Schneiderlin agreeing a £22million transfer to Everton and United open to offers for former Bayern Munich and Germany captain Bastian Schweinsteiger over the winter, Fellaini’s importance to his manager is unlikely to diminish this season.

Sources close to Fellaini have insisted that the player is determined to remain at United beyond his contract extension, but the club’s main motive to trigger their option may just ultimately be a move designed at protecting the value of their asset and avoid the risk of losing Fellaini as a free agent at the end of this season which could be considered as a smart move.

Fellaini has featured in 21 games for the Red Devils this season and scored only one goal.
