According to the Mirror, Manchester United have been given the green light to sign Toby Alderweireld in the summer. The Belgian will enter the final year of his contract with Tottenham in the summer and thanks to a clause in his deal, he will be available for a throwaway price of £26million.
However, a move for Alderweireld, despite Manchester United’s incredible transfer power, is just not worth it.
Alderweireld turned 30 earlier this month and despite being a brilliant defender, he has struggled with fitness. The Belgian missed 29 games for Mauricio Pochettino’s side last season due to a hamstring problem.
Alderweireld’s performances too have been dipping since when he arrived in London and at this stage of his career, he won’t get any better.
Manchester United, realistically, do not need another centre-back. The combination of Victor Lindelof and Chris Smalling has done well since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s arrival and deserve a chance based on their performances this season.
Phil Jones extended his contract last month on a deal which keeps him at the club until 2023. Marcos Rojo is another option for Solskjaer, who did very well under Mourinho and despite his discipline, he is a decent option.
One player who surely deserves another chance at Old Trafford is Eric Bailly. The Ivorian’s performances at the club in his first season was brilliant but has faded since then. Still only 24 years old, Bailly surely has a huge career in front him and under Solskjaer, he could thrive if given time.
An example of how good Eric Bailly can be was evident in United’s 3-1 victory against Arsenal in the FA Cup. The Ivorian started next to Lindelof and had a brilliant game for the visitors against an in-form Gunners side.
Bailly’s pace and physicality suit the Premier League perfectly and replacing him with new additions would be a terrible decision by United.
According to Daily Star, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has rejected the opportunity to sign a centre-back and is willing to give his defensive duo a chance next summer. If anything, United should move in for a younger centre-back, someone who would guard their goal for a number of years.
Alderweireld’s signing would be a poor investment for Manchester United and is one they should avoid at all costs in the summer.
