Why Aston Villa should sign Romaine Sawyers from Brentford

According to a report in Sky Sports, Championship club Aston Villa are keen to sign Romaine Sawyers from Brentford in the upcoming transfer window. If this deal does happen, the player will reunite with his former manager Dean Smith, who is now the gaffer at Villa, arriving from Brentford.

West Bromwich Albion showed their interest in the attacking midfielder over the summer transfer window and he is still in their lists of possible transfer targets. The player has 18 months left on his contract with the Bees. (Sky Sports)

Brentford have struggled ever since Dean Smith left them to join Aston Villa. And the manager is interested in getting one of his former players in the transfer window. (Sky Sports)

Here’s why the Birmingham-based club should help him sign Romaine Sawyers soon:

Sawyers could add spark to this already rejuvenated team

Smith’s value as a manager has increased two-fold in the past few months especially after seeing that Brentford has been poor since his departure. On the flip side, Aston Villa have progressed massively since his arrival at Villa Park.

The latter were flirting with relegation fears at the start of this season and sacking Steve Bruce was a compulsory option. What the new manager has done is instilled belief into this team, and the mentality of never say die even in tough situations. As a result, Villa are now ninth in the table with 37 points, just three behind the playoff places for the promotion.

Dean Smith

Imagine after all this positive momentum, getting a quality player in the transfer window to bolster the chances of being in the top six come May. That’s what Villa can do by signing Sawyers next month. The 27-year-old is a prodigious player who is versatile enough to impact games in various ways.

Predominantly a No. 10 playing behind the striker, the Brentford man is capable of playing as a second striker or if required, lead the line. Hence, in a way, Dean Smith’s men can get a player who can enhance the propensity in the final third. He can also back up Tammy Abraham.

With a key pass rate of 1.9 so far this season, it is clear that Sawyers has an eye for creating goalscoring chances and that could make the difference in the upcoming games. (Whoscored.com)

From the player’s viewpoint, moving to work with his former manager, where he looked more comfortable, should be a no-brainer.
