The big three London teams didn’t really win a lot this season, even though they had some of the best squads on paper. Chelsea were just horrible while Tottenham and Arsenal did slug it out at the top of the Premier League table but Spurs actually having a chance of finishing above Arsenal will certainly not be a good feeling for most Gunner fans.
Tottenham also would be upset at how their title charge lost its steam and Leicester went out winning the league. Tottenham though would be pleased as to how the season did end with them returning to the Champions League but Arsenal would not be pleased at the end of the campaign and even their participation in the Champions League is not a complete guarantee yet.
We look back at the campaigns of the North London rivals and compare their seasons.
Tottenham didn’t start the campaign with the greatest of expectations, though they were expected to fight for a top four spot, no one could have imagined that they would be in the title race at all at the end of the season, especially after selling a lot of players and bringing in only a few signings.
Arsenal though followed suit and only brought in Petr Cech as their one big major signing, which did seem to be a good option to have at the start of the season but everyone did question the lack of a signing to help the side out in the goal scoring or defending departments.
While Tottenham kept out churning the results being close to the top four, Arsenal were leading the Premier League table at one stage but as usual the new year issue plagued them and they did slip out from the lead.
Both sides can at least say that they are going into the Champions League, Arsenal are almost into it, but it could have been so much more this season.
Arsenal and Tottenham faced heartbreak in their respective European campaigns. Spurs did well in their Europa League group but ended up losing out to Borussia Dortmund. Spurs did top their group and even chucked out Fiorentina in the first knock out round before losing out to the German club in the round of 16.
Arsenal though faced a similar story as always but they had a rather poor start in their group stage and just about sneaked through to the next round, they faced Barcelona in the round of 16 and well you know what happens then, bye bye Arsenal.
In the FA Cup, Arsenal were the champions and were looking to pick up a third straight title but they had some tough games and Watford kicked out the Gunners in the sixth round which was played at the Emirates.
Tottenham didn’t fare much better as they too were knocked out at home but this time it was in the fifth round by Crystal Palace.
Harry Kane and Dele Alli easily were the two best players for Tottenham but even Jan Vertonghen and Alderweireld deserve a lot of praise for this season.
Arsenal though have only Mesut Ozil to be thankful for as even Alexis Sanchez struggled to reach his peak abilities this season.
All in all, it was a disappointing season for the Gunners and Spurs. They would be looking to build for the next season and we’ll have a real chance of winning the title next time around.
