Manchester City have been the dominant side in the Premier League for the last two seasons and they’ll be looking to continue in that manner for another season.
Guardiola has come close to creating the perfect team but that’s the great thing about sports – nothing’s quite perfect. This is probably why he’s still not managed to lift the Champions League with the Cityzens despite building a world-class squad.
There have been problems in one department for City in the last two seasons but luckily for them, it has not affected too much – it’s the left-back department.
Benjamin Mendy is a fantastic left-back but in his two years at the club, he hasn’t had a proper run in the side due to injuries, and they can’t gamble on him to sustain his fitness any longer.
They got Angelino in but this was probably to fill the English quota as he was a City graduate. They have Oleksandr Zinchecko playing at left-back but he is a midfielder by nature.
Another problem has been the injury suffered by Leroy Sane, who gives natural width on the left-hand side. Most teams today get their width from their full-backs but Man City have a special talent here.
One player who they were linked with in the summer was the 34-year-old Filipe Luis, formerly of Atletico Madrid and Chelsea.
Luis is a very good defensive full-back but he’s also fantastic in possession. He’s a fantastic dribbler and glides across the flank with a deceptive turn of pace. He was in charge of the flank during his time at Madrid as Simeone would play wide midfielders as inverted wingers.
Guardiola needs his full-backs to be technically sound footballers and Luis would fit the bill. He’s very good at reading the game and carrying the ball, and could easily play as a natural full-back who takes the width or play as an inverted full-back to keep the game ticking in the midfield.

City have a very hungry Liverpool side that is more motivated than ever to take their Premier League title away from them. No team is perfect but City should’ve aimed for perfection by taking Luis in the summer.
